Maher News – Spring 2009
We hope and trust that you enjoyed a blessed Easter in celebration of our Risen Lord! We are definitely moving into the busy part of the year (and yet I am still wondering when the slow part ever takes place). We had some youth groups take their Spring Break with us and help in putting up five of our Big Top tents—what a blessing! We also put in a new carousel rope swing at one of our lakes.
Tom troubleshoots as lead computer guru in the “Nerd Herd” here at TMI and writes software when he has the opportunity. He has also been outside several days a week assisting with jobs which include roof repair and wheelbarrow maintenance. At first he moved very slow on the day after—what can you expect when you put a 50-year-old office guy on the roof? He has adjusted well and will be in great shape for the summer in Africa. I have been overseeing our kitchen (purchasing and menu planning), doing multiple writing projects and working in the office. I took a term off teaching (which I really miss) but realized was necessary in order to get some office projects under control.
Our current plans involve both Tom and I leading a group of North American teens to Cameroon. The team’s assignment this year is to assist us with the running of the national Boot Camp and then visit two of our Rescue Units to wash the feet of orphans and give them a pair of socks and shoes. For many of these children it will be their first pair of new closed in shoes. We will also need to treat many of the children’s feet as they can be covered with wounds, sores and often times worms. We will also be teaching phonics to help the children get a better grasp of English before they start school. What a unique opportunity to teach a group of North American teens servant-hood and at the same time meet a critical need. Tom and I are planning to stay in Cameroon until September 20th. After the team leaves we will finish out the national program, visit the site of the newest and third Rescue Unit so that the land can be officially given to us, prepare for a new BIBLE, MISSIONARY & WORK Training Center (BMW) term, check all the base finances and visit each Unit. In between we will be doing various projects around the base. It will be busy yet so enjoyable for Cameroon is the land of our hearts.
Daniel and I had a good school year. The adjustment of my schedule to stay home until 10:00 AM before I headed to the office, really made a difference. We used those two hours to work on the more difficult subjects and the rest of the morning he worked by himself. At this time Daniel will be spending the summer with his siblings and trying to find a job. We appreciate your prayers for him. Zach is still working at an area coffee shop and Kalah will be home for the summer and will have two local jobs. Tommy is still working as both an electrician and on staff as web master at an area church. New to our family is Deena Drake (Tommy’s first and most likely only girlfriend). It has been a new experience watching our son fall in love but we have honestly fallen in love along with him; Deena is terrific.
As we head into the battlefield of summer ministry we covet your prayers! Would you pray the following prayer found in God’s Word for us throughout the summer?
“For this reason we also since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may have a walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.” Colossians 1: 9-12
We appreciate EACH of our prayer partners and EACH of our financial support team. It is a privilege to be your hands and feet into the world.
1. Wisdom for the appointed responsibilities we have this summer.
2. Pray for the teens, leaders and staff that will be running the Cameroon Boot Camp.
3. Pray for Zach, Tom, Kalah and Daniel as they remain in the States.
4. Pray for the Lord’s leading in Tom and Deena’s relationship.
5. Pray that each of our team members will be healthy and learn more of who God is and they can serve Him.
6. Pray that God will receive the glory in all we do this summer.
Because He Lives,
Tom, Linda & Daniel Maher
