Every morning I wake up at 5:30 AM to the sound of a leader with a poofy mohawk hair wrapped in a bandana singing, “Come on! Praise God! Give him the glory glory!” This is Boot Camp. Waking up early, doing laundry/bathing time out of buckets and (in the case of the OA team) riding motorcycles for 2 hours a day! Vrmmmmoooommm!
As I write this page, I swat bugs ranging from ants to mosquitoes. You could probably make the big dipper just by connecting the bites on my arms, KIDDING, it’s not that bad. But there are a lot of bugs out here. You get that camping in the forest. The 3rd or 4th night we got a huge thunderstorm, that was pretty awesome at night.
Dirt biking is my favorite day activity in Boot Camp. We train by going over bumps and hills and through a mock Zambian village. I was nervous before I got on my bike, but with my leaders help I’ve learned a lot and gotten comfortable. You can start to learn new skills here like that.
The absolute best part of Boot Camp though, is the opportunity to serve God and draw closer to Him. I thought to myself the 2nd or 3rd day here, “If there’s a place that can help you draw into a deeper relationship with God, it’s here. Whether it’s the classes, or praise, or quiet time or thinking about the people we’re going to serve; God is at the heartbeat of what we’re doing here. I’ve grown to love (or at the very least, hate less ) this place and all the stuff that goes with it. I can’t wait to go out with my team and share Jesus with orphans this summer.
