Ecuador Backpack — Teen Trip

First Boot Camp  June 6—July 26

Bienvenido a Ecuador! Spend your summer serving the Lord in the heart of South America, where you will see snow-capped volcanoes, glorious stretching valleys, modern cities and green plains. Your project is at the beautiful Teen Missions in Ecuador base, located 10,000’ above sea level in the Andes Mountains. Following Boot Camp, you will bus to the Orlando International Airport for a flight to Quito, the capital city of Ecuador, via Panama City, Panama. From the airport, you bus to the Teen Missions in Ecuador Bible, Missionary & Work Training Center where you will be doing renovation projects on the base. Be sure to bring warm clothes because it is winter in Ecuador and can get very cold! You will spend a week backpacking on the world’s highest active volcano, Mt. Cotopaxi, evangelizing to the campers and hikers. Housing will vary depending on location. Bathing and laundry will be done using buckets. On sightseeing day you will bus to El Mitad del Mundo, where you can stand on the Equator, with one foot in the Northern Hemisphere and the other in the Southern. Here you can barter for souvenirs such as alpaca wool clothing and blankets, jewelry, dolls, hammocks, leather goods and paintings.

Project Expense: $3190 U.S. plus $30 Registration Fee

  1. Patrick Hurley

How much spending do they need to bring with them?

  2. I have a few last questions 🙂

Could I bring my guitar for this particular trip, or would it be counted as a carry-on item? If not, would there be a safe place to leave my guitar while we’re hiking? Also, would my guitar be included in the weight limit, or is that separate?

    • Dana, Yes, you may bring your guitar. It depends on how many bring guitars as to if you will be able to take it to Ecuador. Sometimes teams have no guitars and sometimes six will show up with guitars. If you can’t take it, it will be left with the clothes and stuff others leave behind for Debrief. If you take it, it will need to be in a sturdy case as it will go with the luggage. However, we are not responsible should something happen to it, so if it is really valuable, leave it at home.

      • Thank you, and I have one last question!
I have a romper/jumpsuit that goes all the way to my ankles and is solid, however, it’s sleeveless. It has thick straps, but it’s not long. Would I be able to wear a long, solid cardigan sweater over it, or would I need to buy a romper/jumpsuit that has sleeves?

  3. Hi, this is Hannah’s Mom. I see that they are supposed to pack their stuff into a box to TMI. When they come home from debrief, how do they bring their stuff back? Will they receive another box?

    • Hannah’s Mom, In your monthly letters is a link for packing hints. You might want to consider packing in a plastic tote instead of a box. They will be issued a duffel for packing for the field and back home.

  4. Im just wondering if we are allowed to bring hats along, thanks.

  5. What type of equipment will I need for the hiking part of the trip? Do I need a hiking backpack?

  6. will this trip be avalibale next summer

  7. Hello Mrs. Kostner,

I was scrolling through some mission trip photos and I recognized that some of the girls were wearing long, baggy athletic pants. I know the packing list for 2015 says ‘lightweight work pants or jeans,’ but it doesn’t say anything about athletic pants. I was wondering if athletic pants are permitted or if it’s only jeans or lightweight work pants? The athletic pants I’m talking about are plain black with two white strips on the side, straight and loose. If they’re not permitted for this year/specific trip, that’s alright. I just had a question about it. 🙂

    Thank you!

  8. Ralph J Gargiulo

I have a daughter who is 12 going on 30! very mature and big for her age.
is it possible to get ger on a teen trip instead of a pre-teen trip?
Her birthday is Sept 20 2002
    Thank You,
    Ralph J Gargiulo
    Teen Missions South Korea 1985

    • Ralph, You can email the office and ask for the exception ([email protected]).

  9. Is Ecuador a work or an evangelism team, as far as the packing/clothes list is concerned?

  10. On the day we fly home (July 26) my I can’t get a direct flight home until 3:45. The information we recived said that the drop off window was from from 10:00 to 3:00. Would this flight be allowed?

    • Seth, That would be fine.

      • Is it still possible for someone to sign up for either Ecuador or Peru? This would be a fifteen year old young lady who has been on two TMI teams in the past (2012 & 2013.) Thank you.

        • Bill, Both of those teams are ticketed, but there may be a way. Please call the office tomorrow and ask for Paul!

  11. Our health care provider recommended anti-malaria medication for this trip if we were traveling to the coastal area of Ecuador. Can you advise if this medication is necessary based upon our travel itinerary?

  12. Hi I will be going on this missions trip to Ecuador and I am wondering how I can see if someone has donated online towards my trip?

    • Seth, It will come out in your monthly statement which was just mailed. If you need to, you can call our the finance office at Teen Missions.

      • Thanks. I received the information packet in the mail the other day but it did not go into detail about what I will need for Ecuador. Will there be a packing list? There was also no information about what the weather would be like in Ecuador. It would be great if you could let me know what kind of clothing would be appropriate for the weather and if you could give more details about what I will need to bring when you get a chance. Thanks 🙂

        • Seth, The weather is listed on the last page of the Individual Team Fact Sheet. It states that it will be cold and to bring a warm sleeping bag, jacket, etc. The packing list on our website under “resources”.

    • Marissa, Yes, there is still room. if you are still having trouble, call our office and ask for the Computer Department.

  20. I was wondering if you could have a family member come along?

    • Victoria, If you mean a parent, then a parent can come as a leader. If it is a sibling, then they can also come with you.

  21. i was wondering if i could sign up for the this mission trip but i have to talk about it with my family how much longer will it be opened?

  26. Hello,
A few months ago I was checking into the Ecuador Backpack Missions Trip, and I was wondering if there is still availability. If there is, I would love to send in my registration! This would be my second international missions trip, and I really want to go with Teen Missions to Ecuador. Thank you. 🙂

  27. Do you need any specific vaccines?

    • Jesse, Nothing is REQUIRED for Ecuador, but you would want to check with your physician on what he/she recommends.

  28. I feel a huge calling for this specific mission trip!! Is it to late to register? And if not please share some fundraising ideas!

    • Natalie, It is not too late to register. Once you register, we will send you prayer cards and letters to help you raise your support. You can also do garage sales, car washes, etc.

  29. It says we will be evangelizing to the campers and hikers, are these natives to Ecuador? Or tourists?

  30. Do you have any health requirements to go on this trip

  31. First off, I went on this team two years ago and it was such an impact on my life. I am so grateful to have gone and recommend it. Second, will the Africa trips be closing due to ebola disease and how can I contact Ryan for Winter Jam?
    Thanks. Lia

  32. Hi, when will I receive my packet for the fundraising?

    • EllieRose, If your registration was complete, the packets go out the same day you are registered for the most part. However, we did over 90 registrations when we returned in September. Almost all of those packets are out.
