What a fun day it was for Malawi II as we went out on Saturday for souvenir shopping. The team members sharpened their bartering skills and went after their favorite items. Most got really good deals for wood carvings, drums, jewelry items, chatengis (African skirts), and more. Afterwards, we visited a picturesque beach on lake Malawi where some of the team waded in the cool waters while the rest relaxed on shore while watching the monkeys and baboons. Some of the team ordered hamburgers and fries (pretty special way out here…). There was some drama when the food was served as a baboon came through an open sliding door and tried to steal Mariel’s hamburger. He got away with the bun so they brought her another meal… and closed the door. Just another day in Africa….
On Sunday, the team shared another program at a small local church. Leann and Anna both shared testimonies and did a great job. Mr. Steve gave the sermon. Later in the day we worked on verses, and held a quiz. On Monday and Tuesday, we travelled to Liwonde Game Reserve and saw Impala, Water Buck, Greater Kudu, Wart Hogs and our highlight… Many elephants! At least one family of elephants passed right through our lodge grounds last night coming right up to our thatch roofed buildings. Some of us woke up to the sound of branches tearing and the grinding sound of shewing wood and grass. It was quite a show to see them so close! The girls on the team had another great sighting of several during their GG class being held from an observation deck.
We have now returned to Chipoka and the team shared a drama in the Boot Camp rally this evening. Tomorrow, we plan to head from the TMI Malawi base here in Chipoka and head back to Lilongwe for our flights the next morning to the USA.
