Gleaning grapes with Elaine

Gleaning grapes with Elaine

Greetings Family and Friends

As we looked at 2015 the word picture that came to mind was TAFFY PULLING! In the Midwest a favorite candy growing up was salt water taffy. Although we never made it at home, it was fun watching it being made. All the ingredients were put together and the tug of war began—pulling back and forth for a long time to get the desired texture and taste. Sometimes life in the ministry feels just like that so we thought we would give you an overview of the back and forth pulls of our year.

Climbing up to see God’s Window with family

The pull is always back and forth, but God’s amazing blessing always outweigh the struggles that we go through. As our spiritual mentor said, we just need to “God Spy” and see His hand at work in our lives.

So we believe we are going through a refining process. I Peter 1:6-7 says “In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more

precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” God’s refining furnace takes us through tough times but the heat separates and removes the impurities in our lives that don’t honor God. So all the craziness is definitely worth it if we end up with sweet lives like that taffy in the end.

Speaking of heat—this was the hottest and driest Boot Camp we have seen in eight years in South Africa. The temperatures were over 100 degrees many days. Combine that with

severe drought and it was scorching! At the same time it was our healthiest camp and not one person got dehydrated. The four teams built a stage in one church, an outside toilet, did gardening, painting, and fencing. They prayed for people and saw miracles of one man who had a spinal injury and was paralyzed only to rise and walk from his wheelchair for the first time in two years! Other people left their addictions of drugs and alcohol and were saved. Remember these are teenagers doing this evangelism! We thank the Lord for the harvest of 292 salvations and lives rededicated to serving Him. Pray with us to reap more as many seeds were sown both in word and deeds.

2016 is off to a great start for us with the opportunity to drive to Cape Town to see friends from back home in Indiana. Jim and Elaine Stopphenhagen come each year to South Africa to work with a ministry near the Cape working with gangsters and drug addicts. We were able to spend some quality time with them on a grape farm and see the beach in Cape Town. We even had the opportunity to glean grapes from the vineyard to eat. “So Sweet!” So we have decided that this year 2016 we will be abiding in the true vine, Jesus Christ.
