Kilimanjaro Backpack

TanzaniaTread on the heels of adventure as you spend your summer surrounded by the rugged beautiful plains and wild mountain slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro sharing the Gospel among the Chagga people of Tanzania!

Dates: June 17 – August 4, 2017

Teen Missions Trip (ages 13-19)

Travel:  After Commissioning, you bus to the Orlando International Airport for a flight to Washington D.C. before boarding a flight across the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, and the Sahara Desert to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A connecting flight takes you across the Equator to Kilimanjaro International Airport. You will then bus one hour to the Teen Missions in Tanzania Bible, Missionary & Work (BMW) Training Center, located at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Ministry:  Experience what rural African life is like as you and your team sleep in tents and spend your days under the Tanzanian skies. Once you have arrived, your team will continue construction on the BMW buildings. You will backpack the lower slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro as you invest your time, energy and love into the local children, giving them the opportunity to know the Creator of the great mountain on which they live. Watch the faces of the children light up as you present the Gospel using puppets, drama, and personal testimonies, bringing the story of Jesus to them for the first time. Members should be in good physical health and free of respiratory difficulties.

Adventure:  Before returning home, you will have the opportunity to put your bartering skills into action while you shop for souvenirs such as drums, jewelry and wood carvings.

Project Expense: $4390 U.S. plus $30 Registration Fee

  1. Can i still apply to be on a mission trip?

  2. Do you still need adult leaders for this team? I am a backpacker and a former team member from waaaaayyyyy back in the day, ’78 and ’79. Linda Maher was on my ’78 team.

  3. Hello!
My name is Kyla Marcum. I am 14 years old in the 8th grade at Christian Academy of Knoxville, a private christian school in Knoxville, Tennessee. Right now in my Bible class we have an end of the year project worth 200 points. It is a faux mission trip. We are supposed to plan a whole entire mission trip, anywhere in the world. We must include total prices, places to stay, dates, activities, etc. Anyways, I was interested in your trip to Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, Africa. I love the activities like backpacking, constructing, & especially teaching the people of Tanzania of the Lord.
I am sending this just to let you know of what I was doing & wanted to know if there was any details of some sort that I should know about before presenting my project in front of my class. I love what you all are doing & if I will ever get the chance to go on a mission trip in the future I would absolutely try to go on this trip with your organization.

    • Kyla, You can go to our website and go under “team reports” and read the reports (and see the pictures) from last year. That will give you a better picture. We pray you do well!

  4. Is there a different packing list for this team since they will be backpacking?

    • Angela, No. The packing list will be the same. Any differences would be in your Individual Team Fact Sheet.

      • Thank you!
We have not received this list yet.
Would you be able to email it to me?

        • Angela, The packing list? If so, it will be in the May newsletter along with the tool list. The packing list is also on our website under “resources” (same as 2016 list).

  5. Is this trip still open to girls?

  6. Dylan Schexnayder

Is this trip open to boys? I’m 14.

    • Dylan, Kilimanjaro is full to boys and Malawi is still open.

      • What trips are still available for 14 year old boys? Thanks

        • Ben, All are open EXCEPT: Cambodia and Madagascar (due to age), Japan, Kilimanjaro and Mongolia.

          • Hello again, I was wondering when you said that Japan and Kilimanjaro were full, is there still a waiting list I could be put on? If that is the case I’m not entirely sure I would want to be put on it yet. Thank you!

          • Ben, We only put those who have registered on the waiting list. It helps to go ahead and start raising your support as spots my not open until later in the spring.

  7. sorry, i didn’t relize it had posted the first time 🙂

  8. Is there still room for girls on this trip?

  9. As of right now how many people are going on each trip? Thanks!!

  10. My daughter has mild asthma that is under control. Would this disqualify her for this mission trip?

    • Nayda, It would not disqualify her if she is able to do the regular activities. Due to the elevation, asthma may pose a problem.

  11. Is the backpacking backpack, tent, ect… provided?

  12. We signed up my son Noah Onken for the Tanzania trip on 9/10/16 and paid his $30 registration fee have not received a confirmation yet. Please contact me asap. Thank you Crystal Wilke

    • Crystal, The staff are still on vacation/deputation until later this week. You may call the office on Wednesday (321-453-0350) to confirm that the registration was received. It will take a few days to get our ducks in a row…

  13. My son is interested in this mission trip. He will be 20 by that time. We found it looking for college age mission trips on the website shorttermmissions. com. Is he going to be too old to do this trip? We were looking for a trip that would push him out of his comfort zone, and this really fit the bill…

  14. Hi! My name is Emi and I am 14. I was wondering when there will be more information for the 2017 mission trips. I am very interested in going next summer but I would like to have more information before I make a decision.

  15. Is anyone allowed to send letters from home to those in boot camp even if they’re not parents? I was also wondering if letters could be sent while on the field as well..

    • Yes my brother went this last year and we had friends sent him letters while on the field and at boot camp just keep in mind the postage time

  16. Savannah Hughes

What would the expenses for this trip be? I am interested in going, but do not want to register if I have any doubt that I will not be able to fundraise the total amount. Thank you.
