Flash Flood Hits Sonrise Palms Matron Unit in Malawi

A flash flood hit in the middle of the night trapping the 62 girls at the Unit in their dormitories. The water was over 12 foot deep and they were unable to open the doors. The terrified girls crawled up into the rafters until help arrived. After multiple attempts the village men finally reached the Unit, broke the window, and then carried the girls on their shoulders to the waiting line of men who had formed a human chain. We are so grateful no one in the village, or the girls were swept away in the waters.

The girls are now at the Teen Missions base housed in our facilities where they will remain for a couple of weeks. The girls won’t go back until the health department declares the area sanitary. The structure of the brick dorm buildings are still good, we will just need to clean and sanitize everything. However, we will need to replace all the mattresses, mosquito nets, repair the outhouses and totally replace the Matron Unit as it was wooden and was ruined.
